<title>Determining your long run training distance for triathlon</title>
    <link>http://feeds.triathlon-calendar.com/~r/TriathlonCalendar/~3/_KnkCYlI95w/triathlon-calendar-blog.html</link>
    <description>triathlon.competitor.com

How far is far enough? This is the question that troubles most triathletes when it comes time to plan the long run in their training program.

Regardless of your race distance, theres probably a long run penciled somewhere into your weekly training schedule. How long you should go depends largely on the distance of your primary race, as well as whom you ask.

In this weeks triathlon essentials we start to break down the final segment of triathlonthe run. In terms of technique, the run is the simplest of the three sports to pick up, but as it comes at the end of the race, it can often be the most physically taxing part of the day.

&lt;p&gt;
No matter your swimming experience or what type of swimmer you are, finding continued improvement in the sport requires purposeful and focused attention. Yes, you can just swim more frequently, and vigorously, but that is the longer path towards improvement.

Nick Radkewich was on the first ever US Olympic Triathlon team back in 2000 in Sydney, Australia and is now coaching pros and age groups through www.triavenger.com. Yes, he was an Olympian and yes he ran at Notre Dame. But what is the most impressive stat on Mr. Radkewich? When he was 14 he defeated a fellow teenager for the IronKids National Championship named Lance Armstrong.

    <link>http://feeds.triathlon-calendar.com/~r/TriathlonCalendar/~3/IV4gRJq_VT8/triathlon-calendar-blog.html</link>
    <description>competitor.triathlon.com

Jim Gourley reports on why the U.S. Military Academies are growing their contributions to the sport of triathlon by turning out stellar cadet triathletes.

In their combined 425 years of existence, the service academies of the U.S. Armed Forces at West Point, Annapolis and Colorado Springs have produced three American presidents, 104 astronauts, more than 100 congressional representatives, senators and ambassadors, a handful of Nobel Prize winners and 156 Medal of Honor recipients. Through their halls have passed some of the greatest military leaders in history and the guardians entrusted to lead our nations sons and daughters into battle. With all that under their belt, now theyre adding some triathlon notches to it.

<title>Americans Reed &amp; Ellis get podium spots at Ironman 70.3 Championships</title>
    <link>http://feeds.triathlon-calendar.com/~r/TriathlonCalendar/~3/es3719wkE90/triathlon-calendar-blog.html</link>
<description>Before Saturdays Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3, no woman had ever broken the 4-hour mark at the half-Ironman distance and no man had finished in under 3:40. Both those records were shattered Saturday, thanks to Brit Julie Dibens and Germanys Michael Raelert.

Mary Beth Ellis was the top U.S. finisher in second place, nearly 2 minutes ahead of third-place finisher Magali Tisseyre (CAN) in the women's race. Olympian Laura Bennett finished fifth.

Olympian Matt Reed finished third behind Daniel Fontana (ITA) to claim a spot on the podium for the American men.

<description>Its been 18 days since I was treading water in the Kaulia Bay waiting for the cannon to sound to start my new beginning during the 31st Ford Ironman World Championship. I am just now able to sit down and document my journey. I have had plenty of time to review and digest all that occurred to me October the 10th. Here is a review of how the day played out for me.

<title>Training: Running Faster for Longer: How to Offset Muscle Fatigue</title>
    <link>http://feeds.triathlon-calendar.com/~r/TriathlonCalendar/~3/3GkIVyId4l0/triathlon-calendar-blog.html</link>
    <description>Running Times

While the lactate threshold is the fastest running speed above which lactate accumulates and acidosis occurs, what it really represents, in simple terms, is your ability to withstand fatigue and run hard for long periods of time. Research has shown that people with less fatigueable muscles produce less lactate during exercise, have a higher lactate threshold, and are able to perform at higher relative exercise intensities for prolonged periods.

    <title>Newton 24 hours of Triathlon</title>
    <link>http://feeds.triathlon-calendar.com/~r/TriathlonCalendar/~3/-NCHCipaJ2U/triathlon-calendar-blog.html</link>
<description>Newton 24 &amp; 8 Hours of Triathlon are about strategy and favor relay teams and individuals who can work and race together the best. Competitors race over a 1/10 Iron distance triathlon course (0.24 mile swim - 11.2 mile bike - 2.62 mile run), repeated for 8 or 24 hours. Athletes do not have to stay in swim - bike - run order after lap one. Teams and solos "bank" as many legs in each discipline as desired, keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is to complete the most swim-bike-run combinations.

We got a chance to catch up with two-time defending Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington at a TYR photo shoot in New Hampshire. In this video clip, Wellington talks about the progression of the womens race at the Hawaii Ironman and addresses the fact that theyll be some new faces in Kona for 2009.

    <title>Why does a Triathlete need a Road Bike?</title>
    <link>http://feeds.triathlon-calendar.com/~r/TriathlonCalendar/~3/zVn9ouJqnKM/triathlon-calendar-blog.html</link>
    <description>blog.kgsbikes.com

Does a triathlete need a road bike? Well, of course not! You dont need anything more than a bicycle to be a triathlete. If you are wanting to really improve your triathlon times, however, a good road bicycle is quite important. Taking the often used phrase I learned from an automobile racer, The best you can get is barely adequate, I think you need a road bike.

<title>What do triathlon pros put in their Fuel Belts</title>
    <link>http://feeds.triathlon-calendar.com/~r/TriathlonCalendar/~3/cwnJUJ1RQ8s/triathlon-calendar-blog.html</link>
    <description>xtri.com

A question was recently posted on the popular slowtwitch forum: What do the pros have in their FuelBelt during an Ironman? Many guesses and theories abound, and some people chimed in with their own ideas of the benefits of carrying extra weight versus having personal nutrition needs at your fingertips.

So full disclosure here as both the managing editor of Xtri.com and the manager of Fuel Belt athlete sponsorships, I have the unique opportunity to answer the above question! Last year, we were curious too, about what it is the pros carry in the Fuel Belt products they use in training and racing. When you see someone like Craig Alexander, Cam Brown or Chrissie Wellington running to victory in an IM, what is it theyre slogging down at mile 18? Heres what they said
